Doors Open Waterloo Region is coming up on September 16th!

The Communitech HubOn Saturday, September 16th some of Waterloo Region’s most interesting buildings will be open for you to see! Most of these buildings are not normally open to the public, but will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission.

This year’s theme is Identity + Innovation! This dual theme celebrates Canada and Ontario’s 150th, and the 15th Doors Open Waterloo Region. The sites will represent who we are a region and the innovative spirit of Waterloo Region.

Since 2003, Doors Open has had more than 300 sites open their doors to more than 100,000 visitors. This year our neighbor 44 Gaukel and nearby schools, churches, theatres, museums, libraries, innovation hubs and more will be open for you to explore.

Friday, July 7 and Saturday, July 8 is Cruising on King, one of North America’s largest classic car shows/parades. Come check out classic cars lining King Street to the sounds of The Caverners Beatles Tribute Band.

July 9 & 10 – Kultrún World Music Festival

Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10 is the Kultrún World Music Festival in Victoria Park. This is a free, family-friendly celebration of diversity featuring local, national, and international world music bands, interactive activities, workshops, performance art, a food, craft, and art market, and more. The festival runs Saturday from noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday noon to 9 p.m.

July 12 – Movie in the Park: Back to the Future

On Wednesday, July 12 the 1985 classic film, Back to the Future will play in Civic Centre Park, presented by Apollo Cinema. The screening will begin around 9 p.m. and Apollo will be serving popcorn! Bring your own blanket or seat.

July 14-16 – Ribfest

On Friday, July 14 to Sunday, July 16, head to Victoria Park for some delicious barbequed ribs and chicken, craft-brewed beer, and live entertainment! This event is free to attend, with food and drink available for purchase.

July 15 – OutLoud Music Series at Open Sesame

On Saturday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Open Sesame, OutLoud returns for its third show in 2017! This time featuring Alan Charlebois and Seline Arsenault. Brought to you by Page 1 Productions in partnership with Open Sesame, they are excited to welcome both Alan and Seline to the stage.

July 21 – ONtour: Kitchener Waterloo

Celebrate #Ontario150 with a FREE concert in Kitchener Waterloo on July 21st!

The ONtour Concert Series will provide the soundtrack of Summer 2017; showcasing some of Ontario’s brightest musical talent and enhancing its reputation as one of the most vibrant, diverse, live music venues in the world. The best part of it all: the event is free, rain/shine, and open to music-lovers of all ages!

July 22 – Rock and Rumble

Saturday, July 22 is the 6th annual Rock and Rumble in Carl Zehr Square. This must attend event for motorcycle enthusiasts and concert goers includes live music, food trucks, craft brewery, motorcycles, boxing on the square and more!

August 11 – Kitchener Blues Festival

Thursday, August 10 to Sunday, August 13 is the Kitchener Blues Festival, one of Canada’s Largest Blues Festivals! The fun starts on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. on the Clocktower Stage in Victoria Park with The Sheepdogs! Get your tickets at ticketscene.ca.

4 reasons to make Treehaus your coworking space

P1020971Sure, coworking sounds like a good idea, but why do our members pay to work here, rather than just using their home office for free? Well, there are a million reasons why we love coworking at Treehaus, but here are just four of them:

  1. Our location. We could write another post all about why being located in downtown Kitchener is so great, but basically, there are amazing restaurants and cafes, events and festivals and a beautiful park – all just a few steps from our front door. It’s a great place to bike to (and we have racks inside), and we’re right next to the Charles Street Bus Terminal!
  2. Our people. Coworking is all about collaborating, networking and just working in a community of like-minded people! While all our members share a love of coworking, we all work on very different businesses, startups and non-profits, so we’re always learning something new. Plus, whether it’s asking for opinions on a new logo or design, or proofreading a blog post, our members are always happy to help each other out!
  3. Our space. Our building has lots of room for meetings, events and working at a desk or even on the couch! We have a kitchen with three different coffee makers, kettles, a toaster, a microwave and a fridge. Our building is spacious and ready for any event, social or meeting!
  4. Our atmosphere. Our residents love to chat, but then it’s back to business. Coworking allows members to have the social aspect or working in an office, but stay productive by separating home from work. One of our most important rules for productivity is the well-respected ‘headphone rule,’ meaning that if you’re wearing your headphones you are in the zone and shouldn’t be disturbed.

What’s Coworking at Treehaus Really Like?

Coworking is a relatively new thing, and while you might be acquainted with the concepts of coworking, (collaboration, networking, productivity, community and more!), you might wonder what coworking really looks like in practice. Here’s a rundown of some common events in a coworking space on a day-to-day basis:

  1. Coworkers come in bright and early to start the day (or not). One of the best things about coworking at Treehaus is that the space is there when you need it, and if you’re feeling a bit under the weather, you can stay home and work in your pajamas. Don’t expect to find many people at Treehaus in the morning if it’s raining, windy, or snowing outside!
  2. We have night owls here. Some of our members work 9-5 jobs, and then work on their own projects at Treehaus after hours. We’re a 24/7 space for our members. Don’t be surprised if you see lights on inside Treehaus in the middle of the night!
  3. Coffee breaks are frequent. We love coffee here at Treehaus, and although we have three different coffee machines in the kitchen, there are just too many delicious cafes in the area to pass up! We make frequent coffee runs to Kava Bean, Café Pyrus, Matter of Taste and Williams—which are all just a few minutes from our front door!
  4. We love eating our lunches in the park. We just head straight out our back door, and we’re right in Victoria Park! If the weather’s nice, you’ll often find a Treehaus member sitting under the clock tower, or on a bench or picnic table, enjoying the great outdoors and bodacious community park.
  5. Our board members do it all. Our board members are volunteers, and coworkers just like you and me, plus their responsibilities extend far beyond the usual expectations of a “typical” board member. Replacing light bulbs, squashing ants and setting up new coffee makers are just a few of the tasks they take on to make sure members have what they need.

Member Feature: Danny Aguizi from feedfive

img_4538-jpgDanny joined Treehaus last March as a full-time member, working independently on his social enterprise, feedfive. Now he’s become one of Treehaus’ most active members, often working late into the night.

Feedfive began as a group of friends and volunteers preparing and serving meals at Ray of Hope, a charity providing resources for people struggling with crime, addiction and homelessness in the Kitchener-Waterloo community. When the group found it was no longer possible to pay for the ingredients themselves, Danny came up with the idea to sell t-shirts to fund the meals and began developing feedfive in March 2015.

Each t-shirt costs $29 and helps feed five people in need in our community, but it’s about much more than just a meal; it helps connect people with Ray of Hope and their other resources. “When someone donates five meals, they’re not just giving someone a meal to be able to go through the day, but they’re also providing a place for them to be with other people who are going through the same thing, and be able to connect with professionals who can help them get back on their feet,” shared Danny.

When Danny first decided to work on feedfive full-time however, he found staying productive while working from home was a real struggle. “I tried to work from home for a couple months, and it was very difficult for me as I wasn’t able to separate my work life from my personal life. It was also very distracting being around my TV and my fridge.”

So he began looking for an office space with fewer distractions. “I found I was much more productive when I worked out of Treehaus with other people around me,” he said. “This isn’t an exaggeration but my productivity and efficiency has more than tripled since I joined. Plus, the location is key, it’s right in the middle of everything and it’s close to where I live. The other residents are great to work with and be around. The people and community-basis were just what I was looking for.”

Feedfive is a very time consuming venture for Danny, who now runs it as his full time job. He operates the business nearly independently, while relying on a team of devoted volunteers to help cook and serve the meals. “If people want to do more than buy a shirt they can donate their time and energy, and they can help with preparing or serving the meals, or both,” said Danny. “We do every third Monday and Tuesday [at Ray of Hope]. As volunteers, we are our own community as well. It’s a great group of like-minded individuals, who share similar values and are able to work side-by-side. Serving meals is also a cool experience as you interact with the guests and get to know them a bit better, and you get to see the impact directly!”

Building a Treehaus

As our week-long celebration of International Coworking Week continues and with our sixth anniversary freshly behind us, now seems as good a time as any to reflect on our past.

In 2010, “coworking” wasn’t a common term. The idea was still fairly new, particularly in Canada. While major cities in the States and in Europe were embracing this new movement, there were really only a handful of spaces in Canada and most of those were located in major city centres.

Here in Waterloo Region, I was interested in how shared space might solve some problems for my non-profit clients (like getting their overhead costs down, and the opportunities to cross-pollinate ideas and share other resources).

At the same time, Natalie MacNeil was also looking at coworking for creative professionals as a way of retaining top talent in the Region. A mutual friend connected us and over coffee on a bright March morning, we discovered that although we had the same values about the spaces we wanted to create, we had very different ideas about our target markets. We parted amicably and wished each other well. It seemed fate had a different plan in store for us.

Over the next two weeks, Natalie and I bumped into each other EVERYWHERE! It was like we were stalking each other. One day while standing in line at a coffee shop we got to chatting and I asked her what she intended to call her space. “Treehaus,” she told me. “That’s so funny because I was going to call my space KNest,” I said. There was a quiet moment as we looked at each other. “Do you think we should just work together?” she asked. “Let’s do it,” I replied.

Four months later on July 1st, 2010 Treehaus opened its doors. Although Treehaus continues to evolve, even today we maintain great diversity in our membership. From non-profits to entrepreneurs to telecommuters, we have a wide variety of people and organizations that call Treehaus their “work home.” And we like it that way.

International Coworking Week is coming up and Treehaus is ready to celebrate with a full week of fun events for learning, bringing members together and having a great time!

Tuesday, August 2 | Open Haus & Chair Graffiti 1-4pm

We’ll kick things off with an Open Haus 1-4pm on Tuesday! Are you or your friends in coworking at Treehaus? Want to meet some new members? Just interested in the amazing snacks including cookies and lemonade? Come visit the Treehaus Open Haus!

Plus, we’re doing some chair graffiti! Bring your old glitter glue and spray paint (we’ll have some too) and we’ll use our creative side to decorate a chair for the space during the Open Haus!

Wednesday, August 3 | Free Coworking, Yoga in the Park & Happy Hour 12-7pm

Wednesday is all about celebrating our amazing location and community. At noon, we’ll head to Yoga in the Park with Queen Street Yoga, for some free de-stressing and time outdoors. Then we’ll host some Free Coworking for the afternoon until 5 p.m., followed by Happy Hour at the Boathouse in Victoria Park! This is the perfect day to introduce your friends to the beauty of working right in a park, and an ideal mix of fun and productivity!

Thursday, August 4 | Lunch & Learn 12-2pm

On Thursday we’ll get down to business (and pizza!) with a Lunch and Learn! Join us and Rob Clement from the Small Business Centre for a hands-on Business Model Canvas Workshop, and a free lunch! The workshop will enable participants to sketch out their business ideas or explore a new direction for a service or product. Bring your friends to check out Treehaus, learn something new and eat some delicious pizza.

Friday, August 5 | Board Games & Blues Fest 1-9pm

Fridays are for kicking back and getting ready for a weekend of fun! We’ll celebrate in this spirit with a Board Game Afternoon, plus slushies and snacks. Feel free to bring in some of your own games, and be prepared to get competitive and have a great time!

After an afternoon of board games, we’ll step right out our back door to Kitchener Blues Festival for free concerts starting at 5pm on the OLG Clock Tower Stage!

Flashback to Treehaus 6th Anniversary Potluck Picnic!

Treehaus guests and residents new and old came together on July 5th to celebrate Treehaus’ 6th Anniversary with a potluck picnic in the park! Everyone brought something to share, from delicious salads to pitas and hummus, egg tarts and antojitos. The weather was beautiful as everyone in Treehaus took a break, sat outside and enjoyed learning more about the diverse range of people who cowork here. It’s important to take a break once in awhile!

To top it all off, we all enjoyed a huge chocolate cake and coffee from our brand new coffeemaker! Happy 6 years, Treehaus—we look forward to many more!

DSC00426Please welcome Laura Janzen, our Community Manager for the summer here at Treehaus. Laura is a recent graduate of the Music & Business co-op program at University of Waterloo. She is continuing her studies in the fall at Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts in downtown Toronto. She has always loved to sing, dance, and act, and hopes to perform professionally in musical theatre following her graduation.

Laura loves Treehaus and coworking because she’s surrounded by a diverse group of people working on so many different projects, startups, and businesses. She has a passion for marketing and communications, and hopes to spend the summer building Treehaus’ social media following and engaging with its online community, and planning some fun events for Treehaus members!

Downtown Kitchener’s Treehaus Coworking Workplace celebrates five years in city’s business community

Kitchener, ON – This summer Treehaus Collaborative Workspace celebrates its fifth year of bringing coworking to the Kitchener community. Treehaus is an incubator for entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations and telecommuters in the region. With an open-concept office setting, a kitchen, two board rooms and more than 20 workstations, Treehaus has become a second home for many programmers, artists and start-ups for the past five years. With the coworking movement gaining momentum in Canada, there are three things that make Treehaus stand out: its commitment to diversity, affordability and community building.

Gabrielle Clermont, Co-founder and Treasurer, has been at Treehaus here since the beginning, ensuring that these three values are at the core of the organization. When it comes to its residents, she says “our members are working in all different fields but we all share a passion for getting to know each other and being part of the bigger community of Treehaus.” Treehaus is part of a vision that favours collaboration over competition and its members feel the benefits first hand. “At Treehaus, we don’t take just anyone willing to pay the rent. It’s a curated community,” shares Clermont.

At five years old, Treehaus is one of the founding grandfathers of the coworking movement in the province. “We are one of the oldest coworking spaces in Ontario. Coworking is still a fairly new concept in Canada. Most new spaces close within two years,” notes Clermont. Treehaus’ success is due in equal parts to support from the community and the City of Kitchener.

When it comes to company structure, Treehaus functions with a minimalistic sense of style. As a space that curates and nourishes the needs of local professionals, Treehaus prides itself on its ability to be financially independent. Operated through the collaboration of a volunteer Board of Directors and part-time Community Manager, Treehaus goes without general executive services, such as reception. “We are the only coworking space that is run as an incorporated nonprofit organization. It’s part of the reason our space is so affordable. Treehaus is a true 24/7, help yourself kind of a place,” notes Clermont.

As a member of the Ontario Coworking Collective, Treehaus believes in giving its residents incentives for choosing coworking over a traditional setting. One of these incentives is the Coworking Health Insurance Plan (COHIP), which provides the stability of accessible insurance coverage for independent workers in Ontario.

Treehaus is taking its fifth anniversary as an opportunity to give back to the community by celebrating coworking culture with International Coworking Week happening from August 10 to 14. Highlights from Treehaus’ Coworking Week celebrations include an open house, free coworking days and evening social events at the nearby Boathouse Restaurant. On Thursday, August 13, Treehaus hosts a free training session co-presented with the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre on the Canvas Business Model. The session features Q&A sessions with legal and marketing professionals, complimentary lunch and a coupon for a free coworking afternoon at Treehaus.

Treehaus is thrilled to present these and other community events to educate and celebrate Coworking Week in Kitchener’s downtown coworking space.
